Courses for speech, hearing impaired Staff Reporter SRIVILLIPUTTUR : In an attempt to cater to the technical education needs of the speech and hearing impaired students, the Kalasalingam University would introduce special B.E. programmes for them, said its Chancellor T. Kalasalingam, in Krishnankoil near here on Sunday. Introducing members in administration of the newly formed university, he said the institution had planned to appoint a trained professional to handle the classes for those students. Expressing the university's commitment towards bringing engineering education closer to the speech and hearing impaired, he said the trained teacher would translate all the engineering subjects into sign language for better communication. The suggestion to start such a programme came from the students after their visit to a couple of special schools in Sivakasi, Mr. Kalasalingam said. Pro-Chancellor K. Sridharan said that the university had also planned to introduce a `Twinning programme' for B.Tech., in information technology in collaboration with two universities in United States. The programme envisaged international exposure for the students as well as faculty members. It would attract foreign faculty members that would help students to gain global knowledge, he said. Besides, the course would be a vehicle for getting more technology from foreign universities, he added. Under the programme, students of this university would spend part of the curriculum at the foreign universities that would increase their professional competence, he said. The university would also introduce lateral entry scheme for B.Sc. graduates in B.Tech programmes. Moreover, the institution had planned to introduce part-time courses for working professionals. S.R. Srikumar, Registrar, S. Arumugam, Director (Research), P. Subburaj, Director (Academic), S. Radhakrishnan, Director (Admissions), Sudhakar Gummadi, Director (Corporate Relations), R. Subramanian, Project Director (TIFAC CORE) and other heads of departments were present. |
