Call to help hearing, speech impaired children

Kannur : Jealth Minister P.K. Sreemathy on Sunday on philanthropists and charity organisations to extend their assistance to helping hearing and speech impaired children become productive citizens. She was inaugurating the cochlear implant programme organised by the Swarasruthi Rehabilitation Centre here.

Technological development in the field of health care had ensured that most of the problems could be rectified with the field of health care had ensured that most of the problems could be rectified with the help of technological aids. In the past, a person born with a handicap had to live with it all his life , she said.

The State was slow in introducing the latest technologies in the health care field, she said

While Thiruvananthapuram had a good special school for hearing and speech impaired children, no such facility was available in the northern parts of the State, Mr. Sreemathy said.

Her priority was the setting up of a public health laboratory in Kannur, she said, adding that allocation had been made in the State budget for the laboratory.
