According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) conducted in 2019-21, India has 1,020 women per every 1,000 men. The proportion of women has exceeded men for the first time since NFHS began in 1992. According to NFHS, India's sex ratio is 985 females per every 1,000 males in urban areas and 1,037 per every 1,000 males in rural areas.
