Sad day for media freedom: US on HK pro-democracy newspaper closure

US President Joe Biden on Thursday called the closure of Hong Kong's pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily a "sad day for media freedom". Biden added that the shutdown signalled "intensifying repression" by China. The newspaper had announced its closure after police froze Apple Daily's assets and arrested staff members over a suspected breach of the new national security law.
