Tajikistan calls up 20,000 reserve force personnel at Afghanistan border


Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon on Monday called up over 20,000 military reserve force personnel to its border with Afghanistan. This comes after over 1,000 Afghan troops entered Tajikistan in retreat amid Taliban advances. Some countries have also closed or reduced services at their consulates in northern Afghanistan, including Russia, Turkey and India, according to officials and reports.

Russia operates one of its largest military bases abroad in Tajikistan. "According to some sources, up to 70% of...Tajik-Afghan border is now controlled by...Taliban," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko said.
