House Republicans on Sunday shared a video clip on Twitter from a press conference last month in which US President Joe Biden said that the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan was not "inevitable" as Afghanistan has "300,000 well-equipped" troops. He also said there would be no circumstance that people would be lifted off the roof of the US Embassy in Afghanistan.
At least five people were killed at Kabul airport as hundreds of people tried to forcibly enter planes leaving the Afghan capital, witnesses told Reuters. One witness said he had seen the bodies of five people being taken to a vehicle. Another witness said it was not clear whether the victims were killed by gunshots or in a stampede.
A video has surfaced online showing hundreds of people jostling to board a plane at the Kabul airport to fly out of Afghanistan. This comes after Taliban took control of the country. Earlier, US troops fired gunshots at the airport as thousands of people crowded the tarmac. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani fled the country on Sunday.
Former Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani who fled Kabul on Sunday as the Taliban took control is currently in Oman, reports said on Monday. Ghani's plane was not allowed to land in Tajikistan's Dushanbe where he had earlier fled to and he is likely to leave for the US soon, reports added. Former Afghan NSA Hamdullah Mohib is also with Ghani.
