Weightlifter Mirabai wins silver in 49kg event, India's 1st medal at Tokyo Olympics


Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu opened India's medal tally at the Tokyo Olympics after winning a silver medal in the women's 49 kg category. The 26-year-old lifted a total of 202 kg, with 87 kg in snatch and 115 kg in clean and jerk. China's Zhihui Hou won the gold medal by lifting a total of 210 kg.


TT player Manika advances to women's singles 2nd round at Tokyo Olympics

India's 26-year-old table tennis player Manika Batra advanced to the second round of women's singles event at Tokyo Olympics. Manika defeated Great Britain's Tin-Tin Ho in straight games (11-7, 11-6, 12-10, 11-9) in 30 minutes. Earlier today, Manika and Sharat Kamal crashed out of the mixed doubles event after losing in the round of 16.

Syria's 12-year-old table tennis player Hend Zaza, youngest athlete to participate in Tokyo Olympics, crashed out in the first round. Zaza lost to Austria's China-born 39-year-old Liu Jia in straight games (4-11, 9-11, 3-11, 5-11). "Reaching Tokyo Olympics was already an achievement. We want to show...even though we're in middle of the war, we must do something," Zaza said.
